“Fellow writers:
We’ve had an excellent response so far, but we have decided to extend the deadline for submissions for the
2012 Sacramento Anthology one more month, to April 30.
So please send up to three poems to sacpoet2012@gmail.com, with a separate cover letter.
Instructions are below.
Here are answers to some recurring questions:
Previously published poems are acceptable. We are looking for both published and unpublished authors. There is no required theme for the poems, any subject or form is acceptable, but if you have poems that reflect the diversity of the Sacramento region, they would be most welcome.
Please share this with friends and students around the area – one more month!
Any questions, let me know!
Bob

- Poems must be received by April 30, 2012.
- Entrants may submit up to three pieces, and there is no charge to enter.
- Poets whose work is accepted will receive one copy of the book as compensation.
- Poets will retain the rights to their poems, but will need to fill out a form allowing the arts commission to publish their poems in the anthology.
(More details and entry information listed below)
The Sacramento Poet Laureate program, which is sponsored by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC), is pleased to announce this call for entries for a new anthology of Sacramento County poets, the first such book since The Sacramento Anthology – One Hundred Poems, which was published in 2001.
This new collection will be a record, in many styles of verse, of what citizens of Sacramento have to say in 2012 – what we think and feel about this place – its cultural and arts scene, its politics, its people – the good and the challenging – in this decade as it rushes by.
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of writers and poets in the Sacramento region. Thanks to SMAC, the Sacramento Poetry Center, and a new local publisher, iStreet Press, which is sponsored by the Sacramento Public Library, this book will provide an opportunity for local writers to see their work in print, maybe for the first time. It will also give writers, readers, and listeners a chance to connect with each other at a series of readings to celebrate the anthology’s release this summer.
We hope a wide range of writers will submit their work, especially writers who have not been published before. The panel of judges that will help select the poems consists of poets who work in many styles. SPC will cover the cost of publishing, and revenues from the book’s sales will support SPC’s work promoting poetry in the region. When the book comes out, we’ll have readings around the county to promote the writers and their art, as well as celebrate the multicultural composition of the Capital area.
There are no specific length or style requirements for the poems, but our hope is that the collection will in some way reflect the diverse culture of Sacramento County. While this isn’t a required prompt, entrants might consider the wide range of arts and culture in our region as a possible theme in the selection of their pieces.
Poets from all poetic traditions and poets of all ages are encouraged to enter!
