Dear Writers, Readers and Friends:

As summer weather hangs on here for a few more weeks, don’t miss out on these events and other enjoyables to help you make the switch to a literature-ful autumn!

Yours in writing,

StoryWorkshop meets this Saturday at SPC, hosted by Zoe Keithley

StoryWorkshop Sacramento continues to meet monthly at the Sacramento Poetry Center (25th and R–behind the fence) on each third Saturday–September 15th–from 12:30-4:30 pm. Local parking in the neighborhood.

Each month we read a short story from American Short Story Masterpieces (Tom Jenks and Raymond Carver, editors) and then exchange thoughts about it the first half of the workshop. This month we are reading Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” an unforgettable and riveting story that offers much for other writers to think about. Our September meeting we will also do some pondering and experimenting with where and how sense-of-audience fits into writing.
We come together to build muscle and depth in our work, and would love to have you join us. Story Workshop is an approach to writing created in the Sixties with some  roots in improvisational theater: using in-the-moment demand to discover and explore our capacities as writers and also get some writing–new or ongoing–done! Some of us are working on on-going pieces and some discover new material in the workshop itself. This is college level work in an approach created by writer and educator John Schultz in Chicago and found recently by Brown University to be one of the three best writing approaches in the country. Story Workshop has helped my own writing enormously. I’d like to share it with you.
Bring a notebook and pen and water. We supply snacks. Questions: zkeithley@gmail.com
